Prepare for the 1st Day

Do not wait until the first day of the semester to get started!  Succeeding as an Online Learning student requires planning and preparation:

1. Activate your Student Email Account

Student email is REQUIRED for all students and is essential to student success.  The College and your instructors will use your student email account for communicating information critical to your success.  If you have not done so, activate your student email account immediately.

2. Log into Blackboard

Blackboard is the Course Management System used throughout the State Center Community college District for both online and traditional courses.  For students in online and hybrid classes, you can think of Blackboard as your virtual classroom.

Your username is your student ID number followed by @my.scccd.edu

Your password is your first initial (uppercase), your last initial (lower case), and your 6-digit date of birth.

For example, student John Smith was born on December 25, 1997 and has a student ID number of 0123456.  John's student email login information would be:

A few classes are being offered in the Canvas Course Management System as part of a college pilot program.  Check here to see if your course is using Canvas. If your course is in Canvas, your username and password will be the same as for Blackboard.  Be aware that you may have classes in both systems - be sure to bookmark them for easy access!

3. Find your course

Once you are logged into course management system, you will see your classes on the right hand side under My Courses (Blackboard) or on your User Dashboard (Canvas).  If you don't see a course for which you are enrolled, the instructor may not have made the course available.  Some instructors will not make their courses available until the first day of the semester while others will make them available earlier.  It is a good idea to begin logging in a week before the semester begins and always be sure to access your courses on the first day of the semester.

Once you are in your course, be sure to read any information posted, including announcements and the syllabus.  Be sure to follow any instructions for "checking in" or completing first day/week assignments to avoid being dropped from the course as a "no show."

4. Purchase Textbooks

Look for textbook information on the class Blackboard site.  Instructors will include this information in the syllabus, but they may also have it posted elsewhere in Blackboard.  Once you know which textbooks you need for the class, you can order them online from the FCC Online Bookstore.  Most instructors expect you to have your textbooks ready for the first day of class!

5. Complete the Orientation to Online Learning

Whether you are taking your first online class, or you have completed a few online courses in the past, you will find that a little preparation makes a big impact on your success. Please take time to complete these interactive video tutorials to increase your chances of success in this course. Begin with our Introduction to Online Learning:
