This course meets all the requirements of Section 832 of the California Penal Code and the California
Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Any position where the officer is required to have a firearm in their possession, or have acess to one in the performance of their official duties requires this training.
P.C. 13511.5 requires those students taking the firearms portion of PC 832 to have a California Department Of Justice (DOJ) fingerprint clearance check completed before class begins. Departments are required to submit or fax a clearance letter on departmental letterhead stating the student/employee has been cleared by DOJ during their department’s background hiring process. Non-department students must provide a copy of their DOJ clearance letter prior to enrollment in the class.
Handgun: Firearm training requires each student to have his or her own handgun. The weapon may be either a revolver or semi-automatic. Only weapons matching the descriptions listed below will be allowed. All weapons must be in good factory approved operating condition and will be inspected before use by the Academy Range Master. The Academy Range Master has the authority to disallow any weapon that he determines to be in an unsafe operating condition or is otherwise in violation of academy standards. Contact the Academy Range Master if you have questions.
• Semi-Automatics: Must be 9mm, .40, or .45 auto caliber. May be either single or double action. Must have two magazines. A magazine belt pouch is also required.
• Revolvers: Must be either .38 Special or 357 Magnum calibers. Must be double-action. Must have a six round cylinder capacity. Barrel must be 3 to 6 inches long. If using a 357 Magnum, must use .38 Special ammunition. At least one speed loader with a belt pouch is also required.
Ammunition: Approximately six hundred (600) rounds of ammunition will be required. It is recommended that the student use good quality ammunition, as cheaper reloaded type ammunition tends to malfunction in many weapons.
Holster: A holster to carry the student’s weapon on (strong side) the hip at waist level. The holster may be made of leather, Kydex, or nylon. It must have a strap or way to secure the weapon in the holster. Shoulder holsters, cross draw holsters, ankle holsters, inside-the-waistband holsters, and thigh holsters (unless issued and required by the student’s employer) are not allowed.
Gun Cleaning Kit: Students shall have a clean weapon before the start of each range training session.
Eye & Ear Shooting Protection: All students must have their own eye and ear protection. Clear shooting or safety glasses are recommended. Ear protection can be either shooting earmuffs or earplugs. These can be purchased at most sporting goods stores.
