At the annual Commencement Ceremony, a senior or retired member of the faculty, in recognition of years of exemplary service to the college, is appointed to act as Faculty Marshal and to serve as bearer of the mace, the symbol of the college’s academic authority. This year’s bearer is Academic Senate President, Mr. Michael Takeda.

The academic dress associated with college commencement ceremonies has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. This custom dates back to the Middle Ages when people dressed in accordance with their rank in society and their professions. Principle features of the academic dress are the following: gown, hood and cap. The gown is black for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. For bachelor’s degrees it has pointed sleeves; for the master’s degree, closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist; for the doctorate, full bell double sleeves. The bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimmings; for the doctorate, the gown is fastened down the front and trimmed with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves. The hood size varies from the associate degree, which covers the shoulder area, to the doctorate, which is four feet in length. The silk linings of the hood bear the color or colors of the university or college from which the wearer was graduated. The color of the band around the hood designates the academic major in which the wearer has taken his or her degree. The cap establishes freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which the scholarship endows the wearer. Different colors of tassels denote degrees, certificates, or graduation with honors. You will see these traditions represented in the academic attire of the graduating students, the platform party and the faculty of Fresno City College who hold graduate degrees from numerous institutions across the country and abroad. Veterans of the armed forces who are graduating tonight hold the distinction of wearing red, white and blue cords in recognition of their service to our country.

A Message from the Chancellor of the State Center Community College District

“We are all concerned about the future of American education. But as I tell my students, you do not enter the future - you create the future. The future is created through hard work.”

Jaime Escalante

As chancellor of the State Center Community College District, I am honored to congratulate you, and the Fresno City College Class of 2023 on your commencement! As you reap the rewards of your hard work, you do so having experienced a global pandemic, increasing economic turmoil and perhaps even some personal setbacks that may have left you wondering whether the efforts were worth it.

Well, I believe they were!

I join our faculty and administration along with your family and friends, in celebrating your achievement. Today is about you – your hard work, commitment, sacrifices and most importantly, your determination. It is about success; about reaching a goal.

Remember, success is rarely achieved alone. As the saying goes, “It takes a village.” Somewhere along your academic journey you had a professor, a mentor, a friend, or a family member, who believed in you and whose support was invaluable. We believe in you!

So, before today is over, take a moment to reflect on all of those who helped you over the last few years. If you can, give them your thanks. For they are celebrating with you.

The definition of “commencement” is a beginning or start. For some, today may mark the end of your formal educational journey but the beginning of something new – a new job, a new city, a new adventure. For others, perhaps this is a mid-point as you transfer to a four-year university. The start of a new phase of your higher education life.

Whichever path you choose, it is our collective hope that your educational experience at Fresno City College has provided a strong foundation for life. This foundation along with your personal values will serve you well in the future as you face challenges and embrace opportunities. Meet both head on, with that Fresno City College Ram spirit. We need you to go out and make our community, our state, and our world, a better place.

Congratulations from the bottom of my heart. We are proud to have you as an alumnus of Fresno City College. “Go Rams!”

Dr. Carole Goldsmith
Chancellor, State Center Community College District

Alma Mater

Beneath the high Sierras

Here arched by the Blue above

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,

Memory may we always love,

Tho years may pass, we’ll not forget,

The Red and White ne’er fail,

Fresno City may it still prevail,

Hail! Hail! Hail!

The Alma Mater was adopted by the college in 1951.

The music was written by Dr. Lucille Williams, an instructor in the sociology and music departments.

The words were written by Noel Frodsham, an instructor in the history department of the college.

The original words identified the college as “Fresno J.C.,” but with the change of name

the words were also changed to “Fresno City.”
