This course is offered in two different formats. The extended format is offered over 9 consecutive weekends beginning the end of January or first week of February. The intensive format is 6 days a week for 3 weeks. This course is targeted for those persons who have previously completed a P.O.S.T. certified Regular Basic Course, completed equivalent training (Basic Course Waiver), or have been awarded a P.O.S.T. certificate, but have had a three year or longer break in service as a California Peace Officer/Level I Reserve Officer. This course is also targeted to lateral entry law enforcement officers from out-of-state who are required by P.O.S.T. to attend as a part of the Basic Course Waiver process.

This course offers updated information in the use of force, laws of arrest, search and seizure, criminal law, patrol procedures, and other areas including firearms training, and arrest & control techniques. There is a comprehensive written final examination, and exercise tests to demonstrate the student's proficiency with the handgun, shotgun, and arrest & control techniques.
The recertification course is not a retraining course and assumes that students have maintained proficiency in basic skills and knowledge. The course is presented in an advanced officer format. Information on uniforms will be provided to students upon acceptance into class (typically less than $100 total). There is no physical training component in the course. However, students will be required to participate in some physical activity during weaponless defense training, impact weapons training and range training.
