Campus Update: August, 2016
Office of the President
Dear Colleagues,
Today is day 20 of my Fresno City College journey, and it has been tremendous! As I reflect back on this week, there are a few highlights that have touched me, and I feel moved to share. I hope they resonate with you as well.
TILE Program
I was invited to the TILE Program for lunch and learned a little bit about this unique program. Equally important, I gained a sense of the staff: their pride in their work at FCC, their respect for one another and their love of this college’s mission to serve. Thanks to Jan Benson (Student Aide II), Pa Vang (Student Aide II), Ashley Mendiola, Arthur Feaver and former student Mike Jensen for opening up and sharing what they love about Fresno City College.
Theft on Campus
You may have seen the Rampage article that was posted on Facebook by Cresencio Rodriguez, noting “a string of burglaries or attempted break-ins were discovered on the campus, forcing Fresno City College administrators to push for an increase in security measures.” This is true. We are ramping up police presence. The article also reported the theft that occurred in our Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Division. I want to assure you that Cheryl Sullivan, Vice President of Administrative Services, is working with SCCCD Police to expand police coverage. This type of crime is a symptom of a larger social issue that all of us are working to address through the power of education. I applaud your efforts to remain vigilant, take precautions to keep college and personal property safe, and continue to do the good work you do.
Board Workshop
The Board Workshop held on Thursday, August 25, 2016, went well. I had an opportunity to share with the Board the process that will be used to advance the projects at Fresno City College. If you are interested in reviewing the presentation, it can be found at the following link: http://bondmeasures.scccd.edu/ This, along with other topics, will be reviewed at my upcoming open event…the first Coffee with Carole on September 6th at 12 p.m. in the Staff Dining Room. I hope you will join me.
Getting the word out…
Did you know that our Women’s Soccer team is rated 3rd in the country? That is the ENTIRE United States! Check out the rankings! WOW…impressive! If you happen to see Coach Oliver Germond (also of Pokémon fame ) and any one of these women student athletes, please give them a high five. GO RAMS!
Thanks to Mark Trezza, Chairperson for the Department of Political Science. He noticed the advertisement in the Fresno Bee regarding our second nine (9) week classes. Cris Monahan-Bremer and her team have been tasked to get the word out…and they are doing just that. You will notice more in the coming weeks. As I shared with you at Convocation, it is my pledge to everyone at Fresno City College to be a champion for the college and our students, staff and faculty…and I need your help. Just like how many of you have been sharing your experience here at FCC; for many of you, first as a student, now as an employee…this college is special. We have a unique place in history, and I believe we have an important role in shaping this city and improving thousands of lives (over 32,000 at last count).
Football Wall of Fame Dinner
Lastly, I hope to see some of you at Sunday’s football Wall of Fame Dinner where we will be honoring five former football players and Cornerstone inductee Frances Lippmann, retired Admissions & Records manager. Frances was a huge resource for all the coaches, and a huge supporter of our teams. Special thanks to Coach Tony Caviglia for putting this first-class event together.
Have a restful weekend and GO RAMS!
