What is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)?

To be designated as an HSI, a college or university must have at least 25% of its student population identifying as Hispanic/Latinx. This designation allows colleges to access federal funding aimed at supporting programs and initiatives that promote the success of Hispanic, low-income, and first-generation college students. Fresno City College is proud to hold this designation, which reflects both our commitment to educational access and the rich diversity of our student body.

What Does Being an HSI Mean for Fresno City College?

At Fresno City College, being an HSI is more than just a designation; it is a reflection of our mission, values, and the community we proudly serve. As the first community college in California, Fresno City College has a long-standing tradition of embracing diversity, and our HSI designation further strengthens our commitment to serve students who represent the heart of our community. We are a college for our community, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all our students, especially our Latinx students, feel seen, supported, and empowered as they pursue their educational goals.

Our Commitment to the Latinx Community

Being an HSI at Fresno City College means we embrace and celebrate the unique needs and experiences of our Latinx students. We are committed to fostering a campus environment where students feel they belong. This commitment is reflected in our programs, services, and initiatives designed to help Latinx, first-generation, and low-income students succeed.

We offer resources that are tailored to the needs of our students, including academic counseling, financial aid support, leadership opportunities, and cultural programs that celebrate the Latinx heritage. Through various initiatives and community partnerships, we are building an environment where our success is collective, and every student can achieve their dreams.

Fresno City College’s HSI designation underlines our belief that educación es poder (education is power). As a college deeply embedded in the fabric of the Central Valley, we recognize the importance of being a source of transformation for our students and the communities they come from. Our mission of fostering equitable access to quality education is not just about graduation rates, but about creating pathways for social and economic mobility that will positively impact the region for generations to come. We see our students as leaders in the making and we strive to provide them with the tools, mentorship, and support they need to succeed both academically and in life.

Transforming Lives, One Student at a Time

The journey of our students is our journey. As an HSI, we are not just a college; every day, we work together—students, faculty, staff, and community partners—to create an inclusive and transformative experience that prepares students for success in their careers, their communities, and beyond. We are deeply proud of our Latinx students, and believe that by serving y empoderando (empowering) them, we help build a stronger future for everyone.

At Fresno City College, being a Hispanic-Serving Institution is a badge of honor that drives us forward. It represents our ongoing commitment to educational equity, social justice, and the success of our diverse student body. We are proud to be the college that reflects our community, and we are excited to continue working together to achieve a future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

"Servimos y empoderamos a nuestros estudiantes, celebramos su cultura, su identidad y su éxito."

On top of that, all internship positions are paid, housing and travel can be arranged at no cost to our interns, provisions can be made for interns to receive academic credit, and free professional development activities are regularly offered during the program.
