Campus Update: March, 2017
Office of the President
Good afternoon,
We are now officially half way through the spring semester and I know all of you are very busy. As the second 9-week short term classes begin, we now want to make sure our students are utilizing the many services on campus they need to stay in class and succeed. The calendar is also full of academic and enriching events to enhance our students’ college going experience and, frankly, to find some fun at the same time. I hope that you will be able to enjoy one of the many events coming up this month and in April and May.
Behind the scenes, we have been very busy with the completion of our Educational Master Plan. With input from all constituent groups, we have developed a plan that will take us into the future and guide us over the next ten years. The plan is in its final draft and has been going through the governance process. To date, the plan has been approved by the Associated Student Government, Classified Senate and the Management Council. This plan is fluid and will be discussed and re-evaluated as we go along.
FCC Rams are challenging the competition in sports this spring. Badminton opened up this last weekend over in the Bay Area and should be right there battling for a title again. Men’s golf is currently in second place in CVC league play. Baseball is doing well too. They are undefeated in their conference sweeping Cerro Coso last week and is in first place. Softball was in Bakersfield this last weekend and is 1-1 in the conference. Swim and dive hosts their own invitational this weekend at Bullard High School.
Last Tuesday was Kid’s Day and so many of you helped make the effort a great success. Fresno City College had a great showing. Volunteers supporting Valley Children’s Hospital were seen all around the campus. Fresno City College was able to raise $9,841.22 for Kids Day!
The top fundraising organization at FCC was the Puente Club, bringing in $876.79! In all, 17 FCC organizations and clubs participated. Way to represent FCC!
As you may have seen in the Board notes sent out by the District, a new solar plan for our colleges was approved and you should be seeing construction of shaded parking taking place this summer. There were some concerns by constituent groups, individuals and members of our community that were voiced at that meeting during the public comment section. I want to thank those of you who traveled to Reedley to make your comments at the meeting. It’s not always easy to stand up and publicly voice your opinions and I commend those who took the time and effort to go to the meeting. Now, the plan has been approved and we will move ahead. The good news is that there was agreement at the Board meeting that the results of cost savings will be directed back to efforts to benefit students.
Go Rams!
