Campus Message: December, 2017
Office of the President
Dear Colleagues,
Every day is a good day to be a Ram, and today it is a GREAT day to be Ram. We have a lot of exciting news to share. It’s time to congratulate and celebrate!
In case you haven’t heard on the news or via social media, on December 3, 2017, the Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams both won their respective State
Championship! To have both teams win a state championship is a feat one doesn’t see very often. According to Woody Wilk, retired Fresno City College Sports Publicist, this has only happened four times in the CCCAA history. WOW!
Please join me in congratulating men’s coach, Eric Solberg and women’s coach Oliver Germond for earning their first championship wins. Their dedication to athletic and academic excellence of our students is evident. It is certainly a proud day for them and their teams. Check out the news coverage from the Fresno Bee on the men’s and women’s team and Channel 30.
On Saturday, December 2, Fresno City College Wrestling team won the Northern California Regional Championship held at Lassen College. Six wrestlers placed first in their weight class, and all twelve wrestlers that competed that day have qualified for the State Championship being held this next weekend (December 8-9, 2017) at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. Congratulations to our Rams wrestlers, Coach Paul Keysaw, and his amazing assistant coaches! And best of luck next weekend!
In other news, at the recent Community College League of California annual convention, Fresno City College received the Chancellor’s Student Success Award. Dr. Jennifer Dorian accepted the award on behalf of the Brain Food Project. The project provides food, ranging from snacks to lunch for all students during tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions. Between 2014 and 2017, attendance increased by 1,097 percent representing 4500 students logging 50,000 hours of learning assistance sessions. The State Chancellor’s Student Success Award honors college programs that demonstrate a commitment and significant progress toward achieving success and equity goals for all students. Please join me in thanking Dr. Dorian and everyone associated with our tutoring programs for their fantastic work! Also, encourage students to take full advantage of our many award-winning tutoring programs.
Tomorrow, December 5, 2017, Fresno City College will receive the Excellence in Effort Award by the Campaign for College Opportunity in Los Angeles. FCC is one of thirteen colleges and universities that is being recognized for our efforts to improve student success. The college earned this award for making significant gains in a short amount of time, demonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to helping its students transfer. In 2015-16, FCC transferred 857 students to the CSU system and conferred 585 Associate Degrees for Transfer. This is an increase of 314 over the previous year and the second largest gain among all 113 California Community Colleges.
It’s a good day for the Arts at Fresno City College! Over the weekend, the college competed in the FCC Delta Jazz Festival, held at Delta College in Stockton. The FCC Latin Jazz Ensemble placed 3rd. This group is conducted by George Ramirez. Mike Dana conducted the FCC Jazz Ensemble, which placed 1st in the collegiate division at the festival.
