Campus Message: May 6, 2020
Office of the President
Message from the President
We are grateful that the SCCCD Board of Trustees took action at last night’s meeting to approve the replacement positions of faculty and staff that the college was authorized to advance. During this unprecedented time and economic uncertainty, the College will continue to place importance on maintaining our commitment to educational access as we know this is an equity issue. The faculty and administrators that were approved display a keen understanding of the importance of our mission and how we will work tirelessly to keep our students engaged and progressing along their educational and vocational pathways.
We are excited to announce that we have filled three administrative vacancies that became open this past semester. We welcome:
- Cherylyn Crill-Hornsby, Dean, Academic Services & Social Sciences Pathways
- Cyndie Luna, Dean, Academic Services & Fine Performing and Communication Arts Pathways
- Derrick Johnson, Director of Athletics
Cherylyn Crill-Hornsby is an alumna of FCC and started her educational career here. Her love and commitment to the ethos of Fresno City College was apparent to all who have come to know her. Her vast experience in securing external funding will serve the division and college well as we navigate these uncharted economic times.
Cherylyn will join the Social Sciences team as the Dean of Academic Services & Social Sciences Pathways on July 1, 2020. Prior to this role, Mrs. Crill-Hornsby has served State Center Community College District for more than 12 years. Starting in 2008 as an Administrative Aide in the Educational Services and Institutional Effectiveness division, she later transitioned into the Grants department Research Assistant position. Upon completing her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration from the Kremen School of Education & Human Development at Fresno State in 2016, Mrs. Crill-Hornsby was hired as the District Director, Grants & External Funding. In this capacity she has spent the last four years supporting collaborative program development at Fresno City College and other district campuses; working with faculty, administration, and staff to develop and implement equity-centered student services and curricula. A graduate of the FCC Social Sciences division (Associate in Arts, Liberal Arts, 1995), Cherylyn looks forward to continuing her family’s tradition of commitment to the Fresno region, which includes three generations of local educators.
Derrick Johnson has a distinguished service record as an Athletic Director and his skill set in communication and fundraising will serve our athletes and programs well. His background in student engagement will prove invaluable as we work together in a new environment of uncertainty.
Johnson comes to Fresno City after spending the last 22 months at Middlesex County College (MCC) in Edison, New Jersey as Director of Athletics and Recreation and with over 15 years of athletic administration experience. Prior to MCC, Johnson made stops at Elizabeth City State University, Riverside City College, and Benedict College. He has served in positions such as Director of Athletics, Associate Athletic Director, Sports Information Director, Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Director of Public Relations and Marketing all at the collegiate level. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism/Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations from the University of South Carolina-Aiken and a Master of Sports Science degree from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL. A collegiate standout baseball player, Johnson was selected as a Major League Draft Pick by the Florida Marlins organization in 1993 and 1994. In 2008 he was inducted into the Ewing High School Athletic Hall of Fame in Trenton, New Jersey for past accomplishments in football and baseball.
Cyndie Luna has distinguished herself regionally and throughout the state as an expert in accreditation matters. For the past several months, she has advocated for the students and staff of the Fine and Performing Arts Division with grace and thoughtfulness as interim dean. The College community will be well served by the addition of Cyndie.
Cyndie has been with the District for nearly 23 years and on the Fresno City College Campus since 2001. She has worked in institutional research, planning, and program review and served on the board of the Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges. She has been in the classroom full-time teaching Communication since 2006 where she has worked on accreditation and served as department chair. For the past few years, she has also served as the College’s Accreditation Liaison Officer and has served on many visiting teams for the Accrediting Commission. She is community college alumna, holds an MA in Speech Communication from Fresno State and is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership doctoral program, also at Fresno State.
Sincerely,
Dr. Carole Goldsmith
