Governor Visits West Fresno Center
California Governor Gavin Newsom made a special visit to the West Fresno Center on November 21 to meet with community leaders, local officials and business owners from the Central Valley. The Governor unveiled the framework for the forthcoming California Jobs First Economic Blueprint, a first-of-its-kind, bottom-up strategy for creating good-paying jobs and regional economic development. He also toured the Advanced Transportation Center and met with automotive technology students and faculty. There was extensive state-wide media coverage of the event. Fire Academy Graduation
The Fire Academy held its completion ceremony in the Old Administration Building on December 6 at 6:00 p.m. 28 cadets from Class 62 completed the 1004 hours required by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office Accredited Fire Academy to earn their Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications and numerous other certifications. Two cadets have been hired by the City of Tulare and five by the North Central Fire Protection District. The 21 other cadets also have internships after graduation with North Central, Selma, Sanger, Kingsburg, Hanford, and Fresno County Fire Departments.
RN Pinning Ceremony
The FCC Registered Nursing Program’s fall 2024 Pinning Ceremony was held in the Fresno High School Theatre on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. There were 100 nursing graduates who participated in the ceremony. FCC has the largest community college associate degree nursing program in California and the second largest in the country.
Architecture and Design Students Participate in Better Blackstone Design Challenge
A Better Blackstone Design Challenge review was held at FCC on December 6 that included architecture and design students from FCC and Cal Poly SLO. Eleven FCC students contributed design work to reimagine Fresno’s Blackstone Avenue. FCC architecture instructor, Andres Diaz, helped lead his students through the Design Studio creative process.
High School Welding Competition
The FCC Welding and Fabrication program hosted a high school contest on November 22 for 19 high school teams at the West Fresno Center. The competition included 6 hours for each team to fabricate and build a welding cart. There were 12 teams comprised of 3-4 students per team that designed and constructed a metal cart on site. A total of 76 students competed, including 12 female students. The FCC Welding and Fabrication Student Club made several safety checks throughout the day and scored the teams accordingly. Kingsburg High School received first place, Washington Union was second and a second team from Kingsburg placed third.
Muro De Honor
On December 10, two FCC Classified Professionals were recognized at the annual Muro de Honor at Arte Americas. Former Public Information Officer Kathy Bonilla was recognized posthumously and Monique Reyna, a Senior Program Specialist from CalWORKs was honored. Their photos will be on display at the Casa De La Cultura for one year.
Sports Update
Volleyball State Championships
The state #1-ranked Rams lost a tough battle in the State Championship final falling to Feather River College 3-2 in Walnut on December 8. They finish their season with a 30-5 overall record and capturing their 19th Central Valley Conference (CVC) title with a perfect 16-0 record.

Wrestling Earns Northern California Championship
Head coach Paul Keyshaw’s team earned their 10th Northern California Wrestling Team Championship on December 7 at Santa Rosa Junior College. Six wrestlers were 1st place finishers and contributed to a final team score of 257.5. The team is headed to the State Championship at Lemoore College.
Soccer Players Make All-State Team
Women’s soccer players Alyssa White and Braedyn Kincade were named to the All-State Team for Community Colleges in California. Alyssa White was also the Central Valley Conference MVP. The team finished their season with an overall record of 18-2-2 losing to City College of San Francisco 1-0 in the third-round playoffs on November 26.
EMT Completion Ceremony
Three completion ceremonies were held in the Old Administration Building on December 11 and 12 for the Emergency Medical Technician basic program. There was a total of 78 students who participated in the ceremonies. The program prepares students to perform patient assessments, airway management and resuscitation along with basic cardiac life support and pre-hospital procedures.
Medical Assistant Program Graduation
The FCC Medical Assistant Program’s Fall 2024 Completion Ceremonies were held on December 10 and December 11 at the West Fresno Center. The program has 44 students who participated in the ceremony and are now ready for their clinical Externship. The medical assisting program teaches the administrative and medical skills needed to work in a healthcare setting that include maintaining medical records, insurance coding and billing, scheduling patient appointments, and assisting the physician with patient examinations, diagnosis, and treatment.
One Table Fresno
The Ram Baseball team, along with FCC and SCCCD administrators, volunteered at the Central California Food Bank event, One Table Fresno, on November 23 and helped serve over 4,500 steak meals, distributed 2,500 winter coats and helped to distribute a week’s worth of groceries to over 750 families.
Ram Ready
Ram Ready, the new student welcome event, is slated for January 6 and 7 in-person and on Zoom. It is designed to help students START STRONG and provide students with a transition into college, allowing them to meet their Ram Pathway counseling & instruction team, take a campus tour, take part in a resource fair, and interact with staff from support programs and service areas such as Financial Aid, Tutorial Services, Student Activities, and special student programs.
Spring Extreme Registration
The Welcome Center and the Counseling Department are assisting hundreds of new and returning students each Wednesday afternoon during the Virtual Extreme Registration being held in December. An in-person event will take place on January 7 and 8 in the Library. Both events include special services available by phone or computer for students to complete their registration process. Services offered are:
- Express counseling to enroll in Spring 2024 classes
- Planning their spring schedule and registering for classes
- Financial assistance and information about free tuition
