California State Fire Training (SFT) Certificates

Each semester the Fresno City College Fire Technology Department offers a variety of California State Fire Training certificate courses including Driver Operator, Company Officer, Instructor, Incident Command/HAZMAT, Rescue, Fire Investigator, and Chief Officer courses. 

Registration Steps

  1. Complete the "Interest Form" found below.
  2. Upload proof that you have met the prerequisites to the online form.
  3. A Coordinator will confirm your completion of the prerequisites.
  4. You will be registered for the course. 
  5. An email will be sent to you confirming your registration.

Interest forms are processed in the order they are received. Once the class is filled, you will be placed on a waitlist. The waitlist is used to fill in cancellations or to fill any added courses during the semester.  

Fees are due one week before the start of the course. The Business Office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the Old Administration Building of the Fresno City College campus.  You may contact the Business Office via email at CBO@fresnocitycollege.edu or call them at 559-489-2234. They will respond within 24 hours Monday through Friday. 

Credit card payments can be made online through Self Service (Self Service Help page) which is open 24/7 and can be accessed through My Portal. Your username is your student ID # and your password is your first initial, last initial, and your 6-digit DOB. (example: jb070476) If you have trouble, contact the help desk at 559-443-8670. 

If your agency is paying, they must submit a purchase order or statement of financial responsibility to sft@fresnocitycollege.edu. Invoices sent to your agency are payable within 30 days of receipt. All other payments must be received 10 days before the first day of class or you will be dropped from the course.

Unless otherwise noted, most courses are held at the First Responders Campus, 3300 East North Avenue, Fresno CA 93725.

  • Fire apparatus preventive maintenance and driving/operating.
  • Routine tests, inspections, and servicing functions
  • Backing maneuvering, and turning a fire apparatus in a variety of conditions
  • Operating all fixed systems and equipment on a fire apparatus

  • Valid California Driver’s License

Interest Form

Course Content

  • Topics include routine tests, inspections, and servicing functions on the systems and components unique to a pumping apparatus to verify their operational status
  • Setting all pressure control and apparatus safety devices, achieving and maintaining the rate flow of the nozzle, while continuously monitoring the apparatus for potential problems

  • Firefighter 1 or 2 certification or Rank of Officer (Lieutenant or higher, or Cal Fire rank of Fire Apparatus Engineer)
  • Driver Operator 1A certification (earned 2008 or later)
  • Valid California Drivers License

Course Content

  • Topics include routine tests, inspections, and servicing functions on the systems and components unique to an aerial apparatus
  • Maneuvering, positioning, and stabilizing an aerial apparatus; maneuvering, positioning and lowering the aerial device
  • Deploying and operating an elevated master stream so the stream is effective and aerial and master stream devices are operated correctly

  • Firefighter 1 or 2 certification or Rank of Officer (Lieutenant or higher, or CAL FIRE rank of Fire Apparatus Engineer)
  • Driver Operator 1A certification (earned 2008 or later)
  • Class C Firefighter Endorsed or Commercial A or Commercial B Driver’s License

  • One of the following: Class C firefighter endorsed or Commercial A or Commercial B Driver’s License

  • Operation of wildland apparatus in compliance with jurisdictional rules, regulations, and operational limitations

Prerequisites

Must meet California State Fire Training prerequisites listed below.

  • One of the following:
    • OSFM-certified Firefighter 1 or
    • Certified Firefighter 2 tenured path (appointment to rank of Officer, Lieutenant or higher, waives this prerequisite) or
    • CAL FIRE rank of Fire Apparatus Engineer (performing in an "acting" capacity does not fulfill this requirement)
  • And one of the following:
    • Class C firefighter endorsed or
    • Commercial A or
    • Commercial B Driver’s License

  • Learn knowledge and skills for entry-level professional instructors to safely, effectively, and competently deliver training.
  • Curriculum based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional qualifications.
  • Learn to deliver instruction from a prepared lesson plan and complete the reporting requirements to the local jurisdiction.

  • Study of emergency response to hazardous material incidents and the role of the incident commander (as defined by OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response regulations.
  • Learn about basic hazardous materials chemistry, regulations, tactics and strategies for mitigation, decontamination, and scene management.

Course Content

  • Effective fire management operations, including fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills (second course in series).
  • Discussion of different fire environments, with an emphasis on local conditions and environmental, topographic, and fuel factors that influence wildland fire behavior.
  • Assessment of fire-line data and fire behavior estimations, and identify areas where fire suppression limitations exist.

SFT Rescue Series

Course Content

  • Low-angle and high-angle rescue
  • Operating simple, complex, and compound rope rescue systems in low- and high-angle environments.
  • Equipment organization and tracking methods
  • Knots, bends, and hitches for end-of-line loop, midline loop, securing a rope around desired objects, joining rope or webbing ends together, and gripping rope.
  • Assess incident needs as related to choosing complex rope systems.

  • IS 100 Intro to Incident Command System
  • IS 200 ICS for Single Resources & Initial Action Incident
