Federal Work Study
What is Federal Work-Study? The FCC Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides funds to support your education through part-time employment, and makes it easier for you to find a job through work experience. It is not a grant (you must work to earn it), and it is not a loan (you don't have to repay it). After being awarded and hired in a work-study job, students will be paid monthly for the hours they work. Most FWS positions do not require prior experience. Students are awarded FWS based on their financial need—financial need for FWS is determined by the student’s Cost of Attendance, minus the student’s Student Aid Index (SAI, as determined by their FAFSA) and other accepted grants, scholarships and awards. This is a federal award, therefore students wishing to participate must be eligible to receive federal funds. Because this award is limited, students will be awarded on a “first come, first served” basis.
Benefits Include:
- Earn while you learn – because this is an educational award, you will have an opportunity to learn about the workforce with employers that will work around your school and study schedule.
- The experience can be added to your resume!
- You may have an opportunity to help your community while being paid for your time!
- FWS earnings are not considered as income on the future FAFSA!
How to be considered for Federal Work-Study
1) Meet the following requirements:
- Submit your financial aid application (as early as possible)
- Make sure that you have a completed file with the Financial Aid Office
* You may check your file by visiting your Self-Service Portal and submitting any missing documents - Enroll in 6+ units for the fall/spring term(s)
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy standards
2) When all above requirements are met, complete the: FWS Interest Survey
* You will need to log in to your student account to access the survey
Please note: you will NOT be approved for the program unless ALL above requirements are met
After submitting the survey
Your FWS Interest Survey response will be added to the waitlist. Because FWS is “first come, first serve,” the first students on the list will get priority consideration. If you are awarded, you will receive an award email (sent to your SCCCD email address) with more information and instructions on how to apply for FWS eligible jobs. Please do not apply to FWS jobs prior to receiving the award email.
Please be patient. Space in this program is limited and it may take several months before you receive correspondence regarding your FWS application.
