Rebecca Benas grew up in the Central Valley in a small agricultural community where she learned how to drive on a tractor with no brakes. She raised sheep, learned how to weld, and harvested almonds and oranges in her teen years. Her love, though, was reading, so after a few major changes, she arrived at English, and she can't think of anything she'd rather do. 

She has a Master of Arts degree in English from California State University, Bakersfield, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Washington. She also attended College of the Sequoias, Coastal Carolina Community College, and Arizona State University, where she swam. She competes in open water swimming, having swum from Alcatraz to San Francisco multiple times. She also enjoys triathlons and long-distance running.
