Nancy Mitchell-Carroll was born profoundly deaf to hearing parents and learned American Sign Language (ASL) from her peers while attending the Mystic Oral School for the Deaf in Connecticut. She later transferred to the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, which is the first public school for the Deaf established in America that uses ASL. She has three brothers who are deaf and Hard of Hearing and a sister who hears. She also has two sons who are not deaf.
Nancy received her AA degree from Northwestern Connecticut Community College, her BS from the University of Utah, and her MOB from the California School of Professional Psychology.
She taught at Fresno State, Portland Community College, Los Angeles City College, the College of the Sequoias, Pasadena Community College, California State University -Northridge, and National University before making Fresno her permanent home.
Nancy was also an Executive Director of the Valley Advocacy and Communication Center for the Deaf (VACC) for 13 years which was responsible for an eight-county region under the California Department of Social Services and ran one of the largest interpreting services in the Valley.
In addition, Nancy was responsible for the establishment of Fresno State’s first Interpreter Training Program (ITP) along with Weldon Percy and Bob Klinefelter. She also established an ITP through VACC.
Her hobbies are gardening, collecting artist bears, and spending time with her dogs and family.
