Maestra Ternate is a dedicated Spanish Language Instructor specializing in Second Language Learners, Spanish for Native Speakers, and Spanish for Heritage Language Learners. Born in Guanajuato, Mexico, and raised in California, she combines a deep appreciation for her heritage with a passion for language education.
Maestra Ternate holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and a Master of Arts in Spanish Literature from California State University, Fresno. She furthered her academic journey with Doctoral Professional Training at the University of Arizona, focusing on Spanish Medieval Literature and Spanish Heritage Language Programs.
Her teaching philosophy centers on the idea that "La cultura cura"—The culture cures-- and the importance of building "puentes y vínculos culturales"—cultural bridges and links-- She is committed to helping students not only learn Spanish but also connect with the rich cultural history of Latin America. She aims to instill in her students a sense of pride in learning a new language and reconnecting with their heritage. She believes that "hablar español es un privilegio" — speaking Spanish is a privilege — and strives to make her students more globalized, aware, and tolerant individuals.
In addition to her professional endeavors, she is deeply involved in community activities, offering cultural workshops, hosting Lotería Family Nights, and organizing bilingual readings. Her personal interests include spending time with loved ones, gardening, engaging in outdoor activities, attending music concerts, dancing, reading, and conversing with friends and colleagues. Through her work and community engagement, Maestra Ternate continues to foster a greater appreciation for the Spanish language and its cultural significance.
