FCC Athletic Teams Ready for Postseason Action
Fresno City College athletic teams are bracing for a busy stretch of playoff games beginning this weekend. The women’s soccer team received a No. 1 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California Regionals. FCC will play either Evergreen Valley College or Taft College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Fresno. The Rams are currently 19-0-1 overall and ranked No. 1 in the latest National United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III National poll.
“We are very excited to begin playoffs and honored to be the #1 seed,” said women’s coach Oliver Germond. “Our team worked very hard to have the success we had during the regular season.”
FCC wrapped up another Central Valley Conference crown after a 12-0 win over West Hills on Nov. 10 but the focus now will be the postseason.
“Once playoffs begin, seeding and records no longer matter,” Germond stated. “So we are just focusing on winning Saturday’s games for now and playing at our best.”
The CCCAA State Cross Country Championships will be held on November 18 at Woodward Park with the women’s race at 10 a.m. The Fresno City men’s cross country team will be in action at 11 a.m. as more than 300 runners and approximately 42 teams from Northern and Southern California will be vying for state and individual titles. The top 14 runners in both races will receive All-America status. The Rams punched their ticket to the state meet placing sixth at the NorCal Championships with 186 points on Nov. 3.
Also taking place on Saturday will be the State Center Bowl as FCC (7-3) hosts Butte College (5-5). The Rams finished second in the National-American Division while completing the regular season with a 30-7 win over College of Sequoias. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. at Ratcliffe Stadium. Tickets for the bowl game are $12 general; $8 students, faculty, staff, senior citizens 60 and over and children less than 12 years of age.
