Veterans Day Ceremony Pays Tribute to Veterans Families
The annual Veterans Day Ceremony honoring all U.S. Veterans, and giving special tribute to Veterans Families, will be presented by Fresno City College on Friday, November 2, at 12:00 noon. The ceremony will be held in front of the Veterans Peace Memorial located in the Free Speech Area between the Bookstore and the Cafeteria on the Fresno City College campus. The community is encouraged to attend. Parking for community visitors is available in Lot M behind the Gym on College Avenue.
In addition to special presentations, the ceremony will include an Armed Forces Salute by the FCC Concert Band, the singing of the National Anthem by Faten Myazne Kassabian, a wreath presentation by students veterans, a rifle salute by the American Legion 509 Guard, the playing of Taps by FCC student Clayton Armstrong and the singing of America the Beautiful by the FCC City Singers. A reception will follow the ceremony.
Ceremony keynote speaker is Dr. Paul Parnell, Chancellor of the State Center Community College District, which includes Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College and centers in Madera and Oakhurst. Dr. Parnell, a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, has been chancellor of the district since May 2016. He retired honorable from the Air Force in 1993.
A special recognition will be presented posthumously to Mrs. Mary Alfieris, Mrs. Alfieris, a 31 year employee of Fresno City College, passed away in April 2018. She served as the Coordinator of Veterans & International Student Services prior to her passing. She was also a key member of the committee that plans the Veterans Day Ceremony each year. Due to her dedication and commitment to helping FCC's student veterans, she was named Classified Professional of the Year in 2010.
