Get your dance on during National Dance Day, July 27
The stage is set for all dancers and dance fans who are ready to celebrate National Dance Day at Fresno City College (FCC) on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is the perfect opportunity for dancers to any level to learn about a variety of dances, practice self-expression in the performing arts, and to apply for FCC dance scholarships.
Going on its fourth year at FCC, National Dance Day promotes the importance of movement for health, appreciating cultural diversity and exploring the progression of dance.
"This day is about inclusion and enthusiasm to try something new with an open mind and safe environment. Everyone should feel comfortable with their dance abilities and embrace the psychological benefits," said Cristal Tiscareno, a 20-year FCC dance instructor and event coordinator.
This all-day event is open to the community and now offers 30 different master classes taught by instructors from local dance studios, high schools, and FCC alumni. These include yoga, contact improv, voguing, Hmong, Afro-Cuban, jazz, flamenco, break dance, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, and folklorico.
Participants may attend seven classes throughout the day and enjoy a 45-minute lunch break filled with entertainment and food trucks. All are invited to watch the free performance showcase at 6:00 - 8:00 pm featuring local dance groups. A special prize giveaway will be held for event participants during the showcase.
With over 450 participants last year, Tiscareno enlists the help of FCC dance students to support the event and to develop their leadership skills in coordinating dance events. Tiscareno explains, "students need to know that there are multiple career paths in the dance industry so being involved in this event allows them to discover and use their talents."
Tickets are $10 per participant and $5 at a group rate with 10 or more participants. Tickets can be purchased at Fresno City College Dance Events or at the door if available. The event is designed for ages 13 and over. an adult must accompany participants who are under the age of 18. All participants must sign a waiver at registration.
