Dia de los Muertos
Fresno City College will celebrate Día de los Muertos with special events November 1 – 5. The Fresno City College Latino Faculty and Staff Association, FCC Catholic Student Association, and the FCC Library have teamed up to bring the celebration to the FCC campus.
Día de los Muertos originated in Mexico and is today celebrated throughout Latin America on November 1 and 2. It’s a celebration remembering departed loved ones and on the continuity of life. It is associated with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day (Nov 1) and All Souls Day (Nov 2). To help welcome back the spirits of departed loved ones, people create ofrendas, or alters. Colorful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons) are common decorations.
November 1 -5:
Ofrendas (altars) will be set up in the Library Foyer. Ofrendas can be decorated with photos of departed loved ones, flowers, candles, and food or items special to the departed. Staff and students are encouraged to bring photos and items to display for the week. Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
November 1:
Free pan dulce, hot chocolate, and coffee will be provided in front of the Library from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or until supplies run out.
November 2:
Two classic cars—a 1965 Chevy Impala, and a 1946 Chevy Fleet Master Coupe—will be on display near the Small Fountain with ofrendas in the trunk. One will be dedicated to children who have passed and the other to notable/influential members of the Latinx community. The cars will be on display from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
