Women in Engineering 2023
The conference for high school female students is designed to encourage more women to pursue STEM careers. Prior to scheduled events, the college will be presented a check of $75,000 from Chevron. With this grant, the college will be holding summer workshops, providing local high school students the opportunity to participate in STEM focused activities.
Women in Engineering 2023 is organized by instructors in the Math, Science, and Engineering Division. Fifty-eight female students from local high schools will be participating in hands-on workshops and demonstrations to introduce different fields of engineering. The students are coming from Design Science Middle College High School, Sunnyside HS, Fresno HS, CART, CTEC-FUSD, and eLearn Academy.
The day’s workshops are based on applying the engineering design process to address a given challenge. The first challenge will be on water purification; hence participants will learn about the process of water purification, and as teams they will work on cleaning dirty water using given materials.
The second challenge participants will be working in teams to design and create a ball delivery device using given material. For this workshop, participants will learn about catapults and how they work, briefly introducing projectiles and needed forces. They will be competing using their created device after lunch.
