Hand to God explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us
The Fresno City College Theatre Department present the show Hand To God written by Robert Askins. The play was produced Off-Broadway in 2011 and 2014 and on Broadway in 2015. The Broadway production received five Tony Award nominations, including for Best New Play.
Shy, inquisitive student Jason finds an outlet for his burgeoning creativity at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet town of Cypress, Texas, until his hand puppet Tyrone - once soft-spoken - takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. It is an "irreverent puppet comedy ...about a possessed Christian-ministry puppet.
Director Summer Session- Plevney shares, “this show is nothing like I’ve ever directed before. Demonic puppets and predatory romance are not something I just welcome into my everyday reading cycle. However, when this play came across my lap, I knew I wanted to have a shot at it. Dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy. Especially one as prominent as a parent. That is exactly what our leading character, Jason is dealing with, mourning the loss of his father. Now that I’ve become a parent myself, I see the world so differently and I respond differently to things than I would have before. How we manage pain, and strong feelings is pivotal
to our healing and development as people. This play really showcases that and that’s what drew me to it.”
The Fresno City College cast is comprised of faculty and students: Karina Balfour (Margery, Dialect Coach), Myles Kelly (Puppet Wrangler), James Knudsen (Pastor Greg), Katya Madrigal (Jessica), Melody Martinez (Margery), Gionni Ruiz (Timothy), and Nicholas Sterling (Jason/Tyrone). Production Crew: Briston Diffey (Co-Stage Manager), Hallie Kline (Co-Stage Manager), Cierra Ostdeik (Assistant Stage Manager), and Raymundo A. Salazar (Assistant Director).
The show is rated R (18+) and contains very adult themes, sexual situations and strong adult language
