English for Multilingual Students (EMLS)

Mission Statement: The EMLS department at Fresno City college is dedicated to assisting non-native English speakers improve their English skills, and offers tutoring, conversation practice, counseling and individual support so that students can achieve all their educational and career goals. The department supports all of our students regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, status, accent and/or language.

Finding The Right EMLS Class For You

The English for Multi Lingual Students (EMLS) department offers classes and services for students whose first language is NOT English. Classes are offered in BOTH an Academic- for credit, and a tuition-free, non-credit format. The department offers a sequence of courses that can help you improve your English to get a better job, help your children in school, and work towards your degree or certificate goals. The advanced EMLS course will prepare you for English 1A, as well as other content area classes.

Students are advised to take the Guided Student Self Placement Assessment for accurate placement. This information and assistance from a counselor will help you select the most appropriate course level.

Before you register for classes:

At Fresno City College, we want to help you succeed, and part of your success depends on enrolling in courses that match your abilities and skill level in English. The EMLS Guided Student Self-Placement process will help place you in all the courses that are the best match for you based on your life circumstances, English ability level, and your overall goals. You cannot “fail” the test and there is no cost to take it.

You can take this test online at home, or you can take it at the FCC Assessment Center.

To take the assessment online at home, please click here to begin the Guided Student Self Placement

After you complete the process, you will receive a recommended placement into the EMLS course sequence. You can choose either Credit classes or Noncredit classes.

NoteInternational Students have further requirements and documentation to submit for placement. For more information, go to the International Students Office in Student Services Building #108 M-F 9:00 am-5:00 pm, call +1.559.442.8256  or email FCC - International Student Office
